This animation supports Figure 2.23. It shows the difference between free and restricted diffusion in water. If the extracellular space is small, molecules have less room to diffuse than when the extracellular space is large. A tissues ADC is dependent on the net displacement of molecules across an area of tissue per second. Restricted diffusion, therefore, results in a low ADC, whereas free diffusion results in a high ADC.
